David, I think you hit something here. I find I very rarely do I use my phone to reach anyone unless it's via text. I'm connected to my blackberry like a third hand and am always firing off texts at rapid speed, replying to my 3 email addresses I have linked with my bb and always have my facebook and myspace up and minimized on my screen, which btw I am now using to IM on as well. And to boot MSN pings me throughout the day with more friends wanting to connect. It's a wonder I get any work done. My brain functions somehow and my friends and co-workers are amazed at how I can be focussed on multiple tasks and conversations at the same time. What does all this have to do with your post? My first thought, which was I never use my phone anymore. So if you are not connected in any of these networks, it's like an out of sight out of mind reflex - I simply fail to see you. My kids text me, my brothers and sisters email me, as does my mom. They know that's where I live, work and play. If I call someone it's a big deal. People will joke that I do exist - upto that point they thought I was just a widget of their imagination.

Well my mom is on facebook...and i think i talk to my mom too much, i call her everyday, sometimes just to tell her something that happened that day. I miss being able to hang out with my mom cause she lives in Victoria. But i am guilty of checking facebook first thing in the morning, but only after my husband has gone to work... which is better - facebook or TV? That i wonder about, we (soceity) watch alot of TV and the use of computers over the past 10 years has skyrocketed, so is one better than the other or are they both equally as terrible for you.

I don't have a Facebook account but I am guilty of not phoning my mom as much as I should, she lives about 180 kms away. Although I do phone here twice a month and we, my wife and me, visit a couple times a year. I love my mom to death but do find conversations with her a bit trying at times. Hmmm, maybe Facebook is something to consider. (wink)

I don't know I think it is matter of establishing balance in your personal life. With my daughter's, I spent alot of time with them when they were young out on walks and to this day it is an activity we partake in at least twice a week spontaneously. We take that time for each other. Part of having that relationship, is recognizing and respecting the other supports they have in their life and that includes their on-line friendships. The open communication really needs to be established when they are young these days. With my other family, well we talk now and then and our bond is an unspoken one, maybe that is it. We don't need to yack all the time to know that we are important, that non-verbal communication and heart stuff has also been established through the years, something that will likely happen when my kids set off on their own. I am pretty contented with where things are at in that regard.
But I am at work(on break)and the security camera caught the neighborhood cat spraying on my car(again), but at least I now know it wasn't me stinking it up the last few weeks. Gotta love technology.

i'm completely guilty of that!! though not just in regards to my mom... but everyone!!!
i rarely talk to the people i care the most about!! and not a day passes that i don't think about that and feel horribly guilty because of it!!
but i fing it just gets harder with everyday that goes by, i'm always assuming people have forgotten i even exist, or just don't care and am glad i'm not around!! ..or even are angry with me that i've become so distant.
but i do make time to always check in on everyone on either facebook and/or myspace, just to know if they're doing ok!!
... which i just find that really sad, because i always feel like i'm on the outside looking in.. which i'll be the first to admit, is pretty damn depressing!!!!
but that is why i hope and am currently planning on changing this!!!
i really just miss hearing everyones voice and seeing them in person as well...
where as sure, these websites are great - they just pale in comparison to the the real thing and having real contact with the people you love!!!
so as for me, i'm saying screw facebook, and screw myspace!!!
i would much prefer real life!!! :)

i thought i was guilty for a moment there. but the thing is i still like a very decent and personal conversation with people i live and hang out with. cant replace it with just typing and reading words on a screen.

I guess I am lucky that my mom has facebook. It saves on the long distance bill. My mom is the one I talk to most on facebook. Emails and little gifts, I think it is great. I really don't like talking on the phone much, so I prefer this. Even before facebook we talked through emails, facebook makes it easier when she nags for pictures too. She actually had a facebook account before me. She did however call the other day to see if I was drowning in the flood... I suppose we still do use the phone for imporant things that can't wait for a response by email...
On a more amazing note... I was talking to my Grandma on msn yesterday. I made her a computer and my little brother shows her how to use it. Since December it's amazing how far shes come... even if she says she will throw it out the window every time. I absolutely love getting emails from Grandma. I feel special.. Who else can say that their grandma talks to them on msn and emails them? Not many!
Even with the facebook popularity... I know whats most important in life... I could certainly do without facebook, but I like being able to see pictures my mom posts and talk to her more often than if facebook were non-existant.
I usually don't go on the computer first thing in the morning during the week, as all of my days are spent on it at work, the most I usually do is turn on some music... On the weekend however, I check emails and facebook and du.com... but it is too earily to call anyone anyway...
I like to think I have a good balance.
