Why Twitter Gets a Break

Nat Torkington on the O’Reilly radar pondered why Twitter gets a pass.

“It feels like we’re on Twitter’s side, and that’s an amazing and rare thing for a company to have. Any other startup and the users would have bolted to any of the improbably-named Twitter-clone startups after Twitter’s first weekend with no tweets.”

Maybe because the conversation is casual. We like Twitter . We like the cute name. Everyone is there already and to move to the “new Twitter” is, well just a pain. If Twitter is down it really doesn’t effect business. Its just not that important. Its loose conversation. If disqus goes down and i loose or cant get my blog comments, that would be different (the reason i keep stalling on installing it).
But twitter is casual, and if its down, i just move on to something else till its back.

When Twitter goes down do you get pissed or just chill?

Absolutely! Twitter is like the junk food of the online world. We enjoy it but we know that it is really just empty calories!

For me, its all about the cute factor. My phone now chirps when I get tweets and that only works as long as they are called tweets!! LOL! That is good enough reason for me.

Most of the time it doesn’t matter that much which works in Titter’s favor. I’ve recently made a bunch of contacts that I only have on twitter. I’ve never bothered getting their number or email and when I need to reach them and twitter is down, its like our communication link has been cut. If we are hooking up at an event and we use twitter to make arrangements and stay in touch … it is very annoying with twitter goes down.

good point allan, for myself i can never keep up with the conversation on twitter.it seems a already have 45 things going on at one time and feed conversations like twitter and friendfeeder just overwhelm me. i have to keep the way i monitor those conversations “casual”:)

I’ve felt very disconnected from my online friends since Twitter’s been down so often. Most of the people I know through podcasting are on there and it’s pretty much the only way we communicate. Without it I feel like the link to my most of my “tribe” is missing.

Twitter’s just having scaling problems right now. They’ve realized that large portions of their code need to be rewritten from scratch. It’s probably going to be a few more months before things get back to normal (if they do at all). But, the service has made me happy enough in the past 2 years of me using it, that I’m willing to give it these next few months if it means long-term stability.

Everyone is invited to follow me on Twitter, everyone reading this are all accepted purely based on your excellent musical tastes :)

Ever since using Twitter to follow the aftermath of the earthquake in China and figuring out if my family is okay, I have learned to look at Twitter with a different light. It used to be more junkfood-ish for me too, but now I am learning to use it in smarter ways, filtering out the junk and go for the essence instead. However, just like traffic jams exist in life, I just chill and do other things when Twitter is down.

I’m tired of new media douche-bags ragging on Twitter just because they’re having scaling issues. It’s f**king retarded. The service is free and, to that extent, you get what you pay for.

And you’re completely right: If Twitter is down it really doesn’t effect business. Its just not that important. Its loose conversation..
