Is Ashley Macisaac’s (musical) life worth $1.5 Million?
Well the auction is over.
CBCNews.ca “Fiddler Ashley MacIsaac, as known for his attention-seeking stunts as his musical talents, has launched an online auction to sell half of his future revenue. In an eBay listing, the 33-year-old musician says he’ll share 50 per cent of his future receipts with a winning bidder until the day he dies. The deal also includes a concert a year for the next decade, located wherever the winner chooses. As of Wednesday afternoon, one anonymous eBay account holder has met MacIsaac’s starting bid of $1.5 million. The auction ends July 7.”
As far as i can tell the one bidder has disappeared and the auction has been taken down. Im not sure if its brilliant or sad.
Did anyone hear more on this, how it ended?

I think the real question is: does the PR stunt add value or take away from Ashley, his music and his art.
That question’s answer is obvious.
And for good or for ill, that has always been the question with him, involving the relationship between the psychology of an artist (with all its ego/neuroses/suffering) and his/her talent. Seen from the outside, for Ashley, the relationship has often seemed an epic battle writ large. Some feel it shouldn’t have to be that way, others feel it must be that way. But it’s the artist’s life. So we’ll see where this goes.
Honestly, if someone has to go this low, maybe he lacks skills. I’m just being general here because I’ve never heard of him before so I guess I need to do my home work now, still my opinion is that I don’t like his idea.
I did my research and if I had that kind of money, I’d find good use for it, like buy a dead planet.
While crapped out on the couch today I was watching Judge Mathis.
He advised someone “choose a career that you would do for free and then find a way to get paid doing it”
I don’t know what the outcome was David, sorry.
Unfortunately I can’t find the outcome. Probably just a PR stunt, but the concept is kind of interesting though isn’t it? Paid just once up front, what ever one figures they would need to invest to live comfortably for the rest of their life. As an artist, this not having to worry about making money in the future, might really free one up to create whatever they feel instead of what will sell. For an artist as talented as Ashley this could be interesting. Of course that’s assuming it was actually invested wisely and he didn’t end up bankrupt in a few years.
No one seems to know why the listing has disappeared. I believe it was just a publicity stunt for sure. Who would ever bid on that anyways, especially since Ashley declared bankruptcy in 2000….he’s not an artist I would ever invest my money in. He probably got one of his friends to bid so that he could get as much media coverage as possible and then pulled the listing before the auction ended.
Real or not, if you are desperate to play as an artist and money is the issue (haha which almost always is with artists), solve the issue in a way that frees you up to do what your passion is. This was creative albit outrageous. I don’t know much about Ashley MacIssac recently, haven’t been following him for a decade or so
Well, I give the guy credit for this: he definately doesn’t have committment issues! I have trouble committing to things in the next month, forget the rest of my life!!!
Wasn’t that a brilliant idea! Isn’t it amazing what you can put up for sale. And if the music doesn’t work - why not try to sell your soul?… A sponsor for life..
Couldn’t think of a better place to put this.
This is a facebook add i recently saw:
“Love David Usher?
Daniel Ghattas is a Montrealer whose pop songs will stick to your heart. Click now for a free download of “What You Do” !”
Daniel is awesome!!!!
Rafe- I get the same “Love David Usher?” ad on my facebook page from time to time that promotes Daniel Ghattas. (has anyone heard Daniel’s music?)
Facebook obviously uses the personal information you share to personalize your ads.
I also have John Mayer listed as one of my favourite artists, and I’ve had John Mayer facebook ads as well.
I wonder how much musicians pay for those ads??
you can target really easily and its not to expensive for those banners. hummm, wonder if i can sue daniel:)
I think it’s one thing to target a similar artist, but another to say “Do you like x band? Than you’ll love me”.
That feels really dirty.
Better yet, sue Facebook. They are the ones making money off of it. Daniel Ghattas is just giving away a free download
don’t sue him David, take him on tour with you…instead.
his music is brilliant…and he’s a nice guy to boot.
Canadians don’t sue, do we?
@David - LOL! So true. But you lived in the US for a while so I thought it might have rubbed off on you!
