Do Demo’s startups suck?
Im not saying the startups suck but Im with Robert Scoble on this. The websites for the startups at DEMO this year are boring. I went through the list hoping to see something that excited me. Snooze. He’s getting a lot of hatemail right now for being so blunt but lets be real for a second. Your website is your calling card. Your a new startup hoping to make it in the competitive world of the web. The very least that should be demanded is that your site rocks.
My 20 cents…

I thought I would check out a few sites on topics that would be interesting but I couldn’t really tell by their names so I guessed. Some of them I could not figure out their purpose so what the heck am i doing here, others were kind of coorporate for my tastes(not much passion), one wasn’t too bad but I couldn’t be bothered to register for the demo that i clicked on(don’t feel like joining anything tonight), and i was bored. I agree with Robert.
BUT I did not know this existed before so i have some information i can pass on to some creative enterpreneurs and graphic designers who may cross my path(ya never know), the only place to go is up!! There is opportunity for advancement.
Thanks for the twenty cents–I’ll invest.
Going to have to disagree with you a bit on this David. As a startup, we count every penny and need to focus on every minute spent to ensure it brings us closer to our goal. In our case, we connect directly with media companies and have more interest than our little company can handle so the website doesn’t bring much value for now. Busy like hell building product. check http://www.favequest.com and you’ll see the simplest, most useless site ever.
My wife is an awesome graphic designer … no web site, no portfolio, no business card … all word of mouth successfully for last 15 years. The point I’m trying to make is that unless the website is going to bring or retain business, it isn’t worth the effort if you’re stretched thin.
Having said that, if you provide a service directly to consumers on the web and your website sucks …. you’re probably screwed.
hey allan
Its really hard in this over saturated media world to get mass attention and i think the point of paying the 18K to be in DEMO is in part to get that attention and capitalize on it. These are web startups, and to not have at least a descent site that explains what you do and how you are going to add value seems crazy to me. They go to DEMO to attract VC’s and raise awareness and profile. This is the world of the attention economy. When you get it, its best not to waste it…
