It is a pretty useful tool. Web developers, companies and users will benefit from this product. Users will be able to leave comments on how the website and various services website offers can be improved. In turn developers can improve their sites, which will provide better service to website visitors. As for people getting too attached to their computers, i don't think there is danger of that. I am sure we are capable of exercising moderation. This application has different uses then facebook and therefore i think it will be able to co exist with facebook and other social sites.

I think it is smart and I think some people get a little too paranoid...don't put anything out there unless you are ok with having the whole world see it. Believe the world is safe. Finding a proper and efficient way to connect to people and manage your pages is important, it can cut down on the time spent on the computer freeing up more for a natural life. It is much more important to be paranoid of what kind of food you are putting into your body, as health is the fastest way to freedom from control. Clean body, clear mind, free life. Who really cares who is making money, get your own advertisers for your own blog and if your content is actually worth anything you will make your own money.

Google Friend Connect? That looks pretty high-tech. Looks nice and sleek, too. It definitely is a major hassle having to run back and forth between all the mainstream social sites.
But it doesn't look like it will take off very well. I think there was something like this a while ago on MSN. Can't remember. It seems that anything like this is always received with little enthusiasm. At the end of the day it is always easier for Myspacers to communicate solely with Myspacers and so on. But I do hope it becomes larger than that.

Hail to the Thieves

Facebook Connect, Google Open Social, and twitter the closed source content trap are all a slap in the face to the Open Principals of the internet.

Any developer and proponent of a truly Open web must take an active roll in pushing for the success of Laconica and OpenID and should not help to extend any closed source application.

Today we have no less than 3 closed source companies in a race to become the "Standard" for holding our Identity and therefore having access to the content that we read and creates. These companies will leverage our content to create revenue; giving nothing back to the content owners or to the community.

Why do developers especially Open Source developers continue to build and extend applications for closed source companies that under mind open source standards and ideals ?

Why do users continue to view giving control of their identity and content to these companies as a win, when in fact the win is clearly on the side of the company that you have allowed to take control of your identity and to generate value and revenue from your content. In return for our compliance we do not even have a right to take our identity and our content where we want.

Open Source developers, please do not write any code to extend the propitiatory services of closed source applications . They are not your "Friend" When you write code for these companies you undermine the integrity of the Open Web.

That's exactly it and I've been waiting for this for such a long time.

I don't think whatever widgets are developed though that it will attract anywhere near a Facebook sized audience, if only for the reason that Friendconnect isn't that one place you can go to and do nothing like Facebook.com is.

Also, now even I am getting concerned with Google having all my data. Google will have all of my comments now? Really?

I agree, David -- I think it's a smart move by Google, and it's open. I've got Google Connect enabled in the sidebar on my blog, and it was pretty easy to set up -- come and join my network :-)

Who finances it and how? Will it increase your internet bills by increasing usage of your website to this extent? Other than that I think it sounds great!
